Star Style - Alicia Keys

As this is the day of the incredibly talented Ms Alicia Keys 31st Birthday, we have chosen today to launch our series of star style updates; a celebration of what is good (and sometimes very bad) about our favourite celebrities style.  And who better to review first then the birthday girl herself!

Alicia Keys bounced onto the celebrity scene back in 2001 as a fresh-faced 20 year old with a so so fashion style and an incredible talent .With a penchant for denim urban wear and beaded braids, the attention was fully on Alicia's stunning singing voice, with her début album 'Songs In A Minor' certify six times platinum, selling and incredible 12 million copies worldwide.

Her signature one earring look (originally made popular by a young and funky Janet Jackson) spurned many copy cats from celebrities to fans alike, and we often saw Alicia's braids pulled into a side pony tail to show off her latest piece of ear bling!

Alicia's early forays into red carpet style were full of fashion blunders.  Her favouritism for long trench coats, particularly of the leather variety, did mean she came under constant critic from the fashion police. A phase of wearing fedora hats with every thing in the mid nouties came under particularly bad review from the press.

One thing to admire in Alicia, unlike many stars of the day, was that she she remained stubborn that she would be recognised for her singing  talent, and not just her fashion style.  This meant that she always kept her clothes on, refusing to pose for half nude magazine shoots.

As Alicia's talent developed further and changed, so did her style.  Years of advice from stylists, in particular her childhood friend and stylist Wouri Vice, meant that her look softened and became more toned down and sophisticated.  She said goodbye to the frayed denim waistcoats and hello to the floor length, neutral coloured evening gowns and smart but funky leather biker jackets, as opposed to the Matrix style leather trenches of the early nouties.   And her dodgy head wear was replaced by a sleek and sexy bob.

Now days, as Alicia has matured into a women in her early thirties and a new mum, we see her wearing neutral coloured jeans or trousers in the day, smartened with an on trend blazer, and glossy natural hair for the day, and in sophisticated dresses in neutral or jewel tones to compliment her complexion in the evening.

Of course, going back to her urban roots, her daytime look would never be complete with out her oversized sunnies and a bit of bling around the neck.  A girl has got to have a bit of fun amongst all of this grown up sophistication!

Alicia Keys; a women we can worship just not for her incredible music talent, but her fresh-faced beauty and simple, but effective fashion style.
